Founder of Baileys gym

Graduating Terry Parker High School in 1979, Don Bailey set built a modest gym for himself and his pals to work out in. His collegiate football career had been cut short due to an injury when he made that decision in 1981.

It wasn’t until 1989 that he and his younger brother Darryl joined forces with their younger brother David in the firm, and two years later, they did the same with him. President and CEO David Bailey, 54, said, “It was a side job for a long time and then it became a full-time profession for us.”

It took them a while, but 40 years later, the Bailey brothers still maintain 16 health clubs in North Florida and Brunswick, Georgia, under the Bailey’s Health & Fitness brand.

Oakleaf Station in Southwest Jacksonville is set to launch the 17th store in July. David Bailey said, “For us, it’s always been wonderful to have a love for what you do. The Baileys’ revenue and workforce were expanding, but the company was forced to close for two months in 2020 due to a pandemic and make additional safety modifications.

In 2020, revenue dropped by $3 million, or 12%, to $21.5 million. From 360 to 285 employees were laid off. It was a personal year for the greatest blow. Don Bailey, the company’s founder, died in August at the age of 59 from a heart condition.

Darryl Bailey, 57, the company’s vice president and COO, described the situation as “extremely difficult” for both the company and his family. Three-year-old twins, each with a different job, had a clear division of labor. Darryl and David Bailey stepped into Don’s shoes and wore them well.

The company’s systems, payroll, human resources, membership data, and other business pieces had previously been automated by Darryl Bailey, who comes from a software and sales background. Purchasing, sales, leasing, and site selection all fall under the purview of David Bailey, who oversees everything.

There’s an incredible level of trust and mutual respect amongst us, even though we have quite diverse interests and styles.” Darryl Bailey was about to say something when the phone rang.

David Bailey summed it up by saying, “Work ethic. Don Bailey, a grandfather at the time of his death, was president, although he had already started to step down from that position. He “was that solid rock that always offered us a level-headed perspective,” said Darryl Bailey.

The firm acquired Don’s share of the corporation via his will. Darryl and David both attended Terry Parker High School in Arlington, where they both graduated in 1981. Don Sr., their father, worked at Southern Bell installing and maintaining phone lines.

Their mother, Dian, worked in the mortgage industry for twenty years after working as a school crossing guard and a greeting card salesperson downtown. Their 21-year-old sister Denise, the third of their four siblings to pass away, was the last of their family.

Don Srmother .’s urged the boys to put him to work after he retired after more than 30 years of service, which they dutifully did at the warehouse. “A lot of people think we’re affluent kids who got this company from our parents. Darryl Bailey said, “That’s certainly not the case.”

Parents are credited with giving them a firm foundation and instilling in them strong fundamental beliefs. “We always worked,” he remarked, referring to his team’s work ethic.

They completed their job, including cleaning the church, unpacking and stocking the gift shop with the merchandise. The offices and a fitness facility are located in the Monument Landing area at Monument and McCormick roads in Arlington.

Arlington is home to the company’s warehouse for repairs. Employees need to keep track of when exercise equipment needs to be repaired so that a repair crew can go to work as promptly as possible.

During the pandemic closure, the Baileys spent $10,000 each site to clean and purify the clubs and equipment from top to bottom, paint, replace HVAC, and install new systems.

David Bailey said we were conducting maintenance, cleaning, and other things that are difficult to do when a business is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. When the government shut down, “We were busier than we had ever been.” Managers were paid in full, and most full-time employees stayed, while part-time employees were forced to take time off to collect unemployment benefits.

According to Darryl Bailey, the firm has returned to 300 people and needs to be at 325. Jacksonville residents may recall the Baileys’ 16-year affiliation with the national Powerhouse franchise.

They parted ways with the national brand in 2013 to concentrate on their health and fitness marketing efforts. The epidemic, they argued, actually prompted more individuals to pay attention to their health and fitness.

They have a membership of over 60,000 people. In March of this year, a year after the epidemic, club visits were at an all-time high. According to the Baileys, good customer service requires ongoing training for all employees.

On the financial front, they’ve expanded without taking on any new debt. That enables users to consistently keep up with the newest equipment, courses, emphasis areas like boot camp and cycling, nutrition supplements, gear sales, and other features.

There is no substitute for excellent customer service, spotless facilities, and ongoing upkeep. “It’s been a tremendous benefit,” David Bailey remarked. In the end, “we can’t give up. Darryl Bailey retorted, “We can’t be beaten.” The only thing we have to do is say, “OK, how do we handle that?” ‘What’s next?’
