The story of Village Health Partners
Dr. Margaret “Migs” Muldrow was born in Ethiopia, where her parents established educational, agricultural, and medical projects for the people of southern Ethiopia.
Migs grew up volunteering in a medical clinic, and this early exposure to medicine finally inspired her to pursue a career in the field.
After returning to Ethiopia, Migs learned that one in ten women die after delivery and that 30 to 40 percent of those who survive are left with significant gynecological issues.
Despite her extended absence, nothing had changed.
Migs was contacted by community leaders who asked her to help them improve maternal health. She was uniquely positioned to build an organization that could serve women in some of the poorest and most distant areas of rural Ethiopia.
Her understanding of the area’s language, culture, and medical requirements allowed her to do so.
With the support of David Douglas, a small board was created, and the Village Health Partners was founded by Migs, Ruth Harada, MD, William Kent, Ph.D., Laury Bowman, JD, and Cindy Nichol, MA, MPP (who also grew up in Ethiopia).
Annual trips to Ethiopia are made by members of the VHP board and other volunteers to meet with community leaders to evaluate progress, identify gaps, and develop future programs and financial priorities.
Members of the United States Board of Directors and volunteers have spent many hours raising money to assist Ethiopian community-based initiatives to improve maternal health in Ethiopia.
