Boca Raton, Florida-based boutique fitness studio brand Orangetheory Fitness (OTF), is the name of the game. Ellen Latham, the company’s creator, opened the first studio in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 2010.

A treadmill and weights or a rowing machine are used in one group throughout the hour-long program. One thousand and thirty-three studios in all fifty states and 23 countries make up the Orangetheory Fitness network worldwide.

As the chain has grown since its inception in 2010, it has exceeded $1 billion in systemwide sales in 2018. Over a million people will be a part of the chain by 2020.

Ellen Latham, Jerome Kern, and David Long established Orangetheory Fitness in March 2010. It is a continuation of Latham’s “Ellen’s Ultimate Workout,” a Fort Lauderdale-based Pilates facility he founded in the late 1990s.

In Inc. magazine’s “Fastest-Growing Private Companies” list and Entrepreneur magazine’s “Franchise 500” list, Orangetheory Fitness rated #415 and #255, respectively. In 2019, it ranked 25th on the “Franchise 500,” and in 2020, it climbed to 43rd.

The Pandemic Response of COVID-19

At the onset of the COVID-19 outbreak, Orangetheory Fitness tried to implement safety measures to protect its personnel and members. All corporate-owned studios were shut down on March 17, 2020. Their example was set for the franchisees, who were urged to follow suit.

While Orangetheory Fitness was closed, all membership payments were suspended. Throughout this time, studios continued to pay their staff. Because their facilities were closed, they created at-home exercises for members to continue their fitness routines while they were away.

Medical Advisory Board members devised a strategy for restarting Orangetheory Fitness during the shutdown to avoid uncertainty while also ensuring the safety of employees and members. “Temperature checks before entry; reduced class sizes to maintain social distancing; redesigned workouts for equipment cross-contamination; class scheduling modifications to allow for thorough sanitation protocols; training and implementation of electrostatic cleanings; temporarily closures of showers and towel service” are the new policies implemented following the guidelines set forth by the CDC. They decided to keep their at-home fitness programs even after reopening the facilities.


Interval training is a high-intensity interval training in which extensive stretches of rest follow brief intervals of intensive activity. Excess post-exercise oxygen intake is the goal of these one-hour sessions (EPOC).

It is a physiologic phenomenon that happens when the body returns to its pre-exercise condition following an increase in oxygen consumption.

Trenching, rowing, and weight training are all available in separate studio areas. These stations are rotated during an event. Workouts may be classified as focusing on endurance, power, or strength, or any combination thereof. A trainer leads a group of people through exercises during a workout session. Attendees have no idea what to expect in class since everything is pre-planned and kept a secret.

The Orangetheory fitness app allows members to reserve a spot in an open class and see whose coach will be teaching it and what day and hour it will be. Any OTF location globally is open to members who want to take lessons.


I was wearing a heart rate monitor on the chest, forearm, or wrist. The metrics are shown on tablets connected to the rowers or treadmills for upgraded studios. They are also displayed on displays around the studio.

The Orangetheory exercise uses five heart rate zones: grey, blue, green, orange, and red.

  • An attendee’s resting heart rate falls within the gray zone, ranging from 0% to 60% of their maximal heart rate.
  • The blue zone is defined as a heart rate range between 61% and 70% of one’s maximal heart rate. As the name implies, this is only a pre-game warm-up.
  • The green zone is defined as the range of heart rates between 71% and 83% of the individual’s maximal heart rate. This kind of exercise is referred to as “aerobic.”
  • Attendees may attain EPOC when their heart rates are between 84 and 91 percent of their maximum.
  • Attendees in the red zone are working at levels between 92 and 100 percent of their maximal heart rate.

Wearable heart rate monitors synced to an interactive screen provide class-wide performance data for each participant.

To create the EPOC effect, attendees are urged to acquire “splat points,” which are dependent on how much time they spend in the orange and red heart rate zones. Each member receives their exercise stats through email and a mobile app after every session.

OTF and InBody have just teamed together to provide members with access to the InBody Test, which measures their body composition. While standing barefoot on the scale, the weight is being recorded.

The scanners are then held at a 45-degree angle, and the limb weight is measured. Users may get an overview of their metabolic rate, muscle mass, and body fat percentage with this 15-second test. What is the structure of the Orangetheory classes?

Classification in a Group

Orange Theory is a brand-new kind of “gym.” and since it’s so unique, I only use the term “gym” sparingly. Orange Theory is the answer if you’re a fan of group courses but dread the aerobics component. Group exercise courses are offered at Orange Theory but in a gym setting.

There is a dedicated treadmill section for this purpose (along with a few bikes and ellipticals if you have exercise limitations). A rowing machine space has been set aside for this purpose. Finally, there is a standard weight room.

Class Size Restrictions

The class sizes are small, and the instructors guide you through both weight-lifting and aerobic exercise, so you get a whole body workout every time. The class teacher will get the treads group going first, then move over to get the weights group started.

You may choose whether to start on the treadmill or rowers first when you come. Instructors show each exercise, then coach participants on how to do them on the treadmill at various speeds and inclines to get the most out of their workout.

Assembled Patterns

Screens in the weight room keep track of the exercises you’re performing and how many repetitions you’ve completed. Typically, three to four exercises are followed by a 300-400-meter row and then a return to the same exercises with fewer repetitions.

For the one-hour session, participants rotate through 2-3 rounds of various exercises and repetitions. After that, the group that was on the treadmill shifted to the weight floor and vice versa. The treadmill and weight floor/rowing machines take around 25-30 minutes of your time. Everybody performs the same routine, except it’s done in the other direction.


Orange Theory Splat Points and the Orange Zone

Splat Points and the “Orange Zone” are two more noteworthy aspects of Orange Theory. This is also unique in comparison to other places. During your exercise, you’ll be wearing an Orange Theory Heart Rate Monitor, which will display the names of everyone in your group.

At least 15 minutes of your exercise should be spent in the “Orange Zone” on the monitor. At least 15 minutes of intense exercise in the Orange Zone can help you burn calories for 24 hours after that, according to the makers of the Orange Zone training method.

Splat points are based on the amount of time you spend in that zone during a workout, and you get an email detailing your Splat Points and calories burnt after each activity.
The Orange Zone is a great motivator for me since it forces me to work harder and faster when I see orange next to my name. Keep yourself in control and make the most of your time there with this strategy!

What’s the cost of Orange Theory?

It’s possible. Even though it’s expensive, it may be worth the investment, depending on your fitness objectives. For $149 a month, I can have an unlimited plan.

A more inexpensive option is to purchase a bundle that includes 4 or 8 lessons every month. It works out best for me to attend three times a week, so the unlimited option is ideal. Individual lessons or additional classes may also be paid for separately.

Please tell me how much a year of membership costs.

There are three tiers of membership in Orange Theory Fitness:

  • Orange Premium 
  • Elite Orange
  • Basic Orange

Orange Premier: It costs $159 a month to join Orange Premier, including unlimited lessons. Consider this membership level if you expect to attend more than three times a week.

Elite Orange: An eight-workout-per-month subscription to Orange Elite costs $99 per month. It’s ideal if you’re going twice a week.

Basic Orange: At this level, you’ll receive four lessons a month for $59. So if you’re serious about taking one class every week, this level is for you.

Alternatively, you may purchase a bundle of 10, 20, or 30 classes at a time. Depending on your membership level, you might pay $12 to $14 for a single lesson.

A heart rate monitor is an additional expense to be aware of. They cost $50-$100 and are an absolute need. It’s possible to rent them for $5 for each class, but it’s better if you purchase one.

Is there any truth to the Orange Theory?

In a nutshell, here we go. YES. That’s correct. The following are the outcomes of my participation in their 8-week weight reduction challenge this year.

There will be no fad diets. I was only planning to work out twice a week for the next eight weeks. I’ve shed a lot of inches, as seen by my side shot, but my progress is far from complete. With the help of my exercises and the WeightWatchers app, I’m hoping to see rapid and dramatic improvements (more to come). This is an honest review of Orangetheory Fitness!

The cost. I’d like it if it were more inexpensive, but I’m willing to make an exception for my desire to lose weight. You may, however, save money by taking fewer lessons than I do each month.

Because of the small class size, if you don’t keep up with your calendar, you may miss out on weekend courses. In my opinion, it’s best to plan as far in advance as possible to ensure that you receive the class hours that you desire.

No matter how long your name is on the waiting list, it’s quite unlikely that you’ll be accepted since classes fill up quickly on the weekends, especially when you decide at 9 pm Friday to work out at 7 am the following morning. At my location, this is the case. This changes from area to location. I schedule my weekends at the beginning of each month to ensure that I receive the class hours that I want.

When it comes to Orange Theory Fitness, is it possible to miss a class?

No-shows must notify the instructor at least eight hours in advance. If you plan to take a class but cannot attend due to illness, job issues, etc., you may reschedule. It is possible and probable that they will charge you for that class ($12 per “late cancel” if you have an unlimited membership) or that they will consider that class as utilized if you have a 4 or 8 class subscription.

While it makes you responsible for showing up, it does not give you any wiggle room if life gets in the way. After the first or even second time, it’s doubtful that they’ll be as receptive to your pleas to waive your price. In other words, you need to be practical and on top of your schedule since you can’t miss without consequences.

Orange Theory Fitness Cancellation Instructions

You must offer 30 days’ notice if you want to terminate your contract. As a result of the class timings and lack of daycare, we had to terminate our memberships.

Even if you cancel your subscription, you’ll still be billed for another month. This is unjust and unfriendly to customers, in my opinion. It’s worth noting that they may “upgrade” your membership at any time without notifying you 30 days in advance, but they must notify you 30 days in advance if they choose to “downgrade” your membership.

Injuries. My body took a serious hit when I went from being utterly out of shape to doing hardcore exercises at Orange Theory. While working out with them, I had more injuries, pulls, and joint problems than at any other time in my life. It’s a LOT of work, and if you’re injured and need to cancel before the 30-day mark, you’ll need a doctor’s letter.

All in all, I’m pleased with my experience with Orange Theory Fitness.

Because of these factors, I couldn’t keep up with it long-term:

  • It was expensive (my spouse and I were paying $320 a month to attend!) OUCH!)
  • Schedules for classes
  • There is no provision for child care (HUGE downside)
  • Regularly, there are injuries.

If I didn’t have the concerns mentioned above, I’d give it a strong recommendation. It’s not perfect, but after only two months, I’ve witnessed huge improvements in my physical condition.

I’m able to recover more quickly and am less sore after each exercise now than I was at the beginning of my fitness journey. My current focus is on general health and treating my body correctly.

Therefore I haven’t weighed or measured myself to speak about my overall outcomes. However, I want to monitor some quantifiable improvements following the new year.
