Bahram Akradi, the company’s chairman and CEO, formed it. FCA, Ltd., a Minnesota corporation, was formed in 1990 and registered as Life Time Fitness in 1992. As of January 2017, the brand’s name was formally changed to Life Time, Inc., dropping the term “Fitness.” The club’s initial location was in Brooklyn Park, MN.
The Minneapolis–St. Paul’s region was enlarged before the business branched out to suburban areas in other states. A total of 156 sports clubs, three residential homes, and ten coworking spaces are available as of mid-2021.

Lifetime Fitness Lawsuit
Several Life Time Fitness workers sued the company in 2004 for withholding pay. Overtime compensation is mandated by federal and state wage and hour rules for workers who work more than 40 hours per week, according to a court ruling made in 2009 in the case of Baden-Winterwood v. Life Time Fitness Inc.
It was held that deductions from department heads’ base salaries by a health and fitness center employer to recoup portions paid bonuses when their performance fell below a prescribed level caused the workers to lose their exempt status under the Fair Labor Standards Act, for example, in Baden-Winterwood V. Life Time Fitness Inc. The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.
During two months in 2005, the Sixth Circuit confirmed the lower court’s decision that the workers were not paid on a salary basis because of illegal deductions taken from their wages. As a result, the workers were deemed non-exempt and, as a result, entitled to overtime pay, regardless of whether or not their tasks met the obligations prong of the exempt test.
When a dispute about wages is the crux of a dispute, everything else becomes immaterial. Employees perform hiring and firing, prepare employee assessments, decide who receives increases and promotions, and who does not remain non-exempt.
In addition to ensuring that exempt workers get the proper compensation (a minimum of $455 under the FLSA, but individual states may set their thresholds), employers must keep a close eye out for any unlawful deductions, such as partial-day deductions. The repercussions for noncompliance with these principles might be severe, yet the employer has very little recourse or defense.
