Brief History of Kedren
A child psychiatrist named Dr. James L. Jones, MD, created Kedren Community Health Center, Inc. on October 22, 1965.
After the Watts rebellion in Los Angeles, a community health clinic was established to address the needs of those left economically, educationally, and medically behind.
Sixteen black male psychiatrists gathered in the house of Dr. James L. Jones after the Watts rebellion of 1965 to talk about the issues that led to the unrest.
They decided to reach out to locals and ask them questions to get to the bottom. From police brutality and absentee landlords to economic hardship, these are some of the problems that locals say sparked the rebellion.
Some locals complained about the substandard education their children received.
In contrast, others mentioned issues, including gang warfare, substance abuse, a lack of parental involvement, and a high number of teenage pregnancies.
In other words, the physicians understood these systemic issues plaguing the whole community. Doctors agreed that to have an impact; they should start with the youngest children who had been exposed to the least amount of adverse communal effects.
If that proved effective, they could expand to providing mental health treatments to the whole community.
This event in 1965 marks the inception of Kedren Community Health Center, Inc. Family-focused education was one of the goals Dr. Jones and his colleagues advocated.
They organized the logistics of bringing the Head Start program to Los Angeles. In Washington, DC, the late President Lyndon Johnson was proposing and enacting Head Start at the same time as part of his “War on Poverty” legislation.
In 1965, Dr. Jones and his wife took advantage of funding from the federal government’s Health and Human Services Department to establish 10 Head Start centers in the South Central neighborhood.
The outpatient clinic was founded on Valentine’s Day in 1965 by Dr. James L. Jones and his team of 24 employees.
After the first week, 40 people in the neighborhood had benefited from the program, and by the end of the third month, as many as 250 families had been helped.
In Dr. Jones’s opinion, Kedren needed to “cross the gap of opposition from a nut house to the notion of a mental health institution.” The Joneses’ second daughter, Mrs. Kedren Jones-Zadikov, inspired the name Kedren.
Kedren is the realization of a vision shared by the late Dr. Jones and his wife, Mrs. Shirley Jones. The initial focus was to provide psychiatric aid to city dwellers via community-based programs.
Dr. Jones thinks this would help the people of South Central and Southeast Los Angeles by making it easier for them to access mental health and early childhood development services, reducing the stress and illness that are often the results of living in an area with a high concentration of people of color.
During the problematic two decades between 1980 and 1998, Gloria Nabrit served as Kedren’s CEO and shaped and expanded the company’s offerings.
Many of Kedren’s significant achievements occurred during the period.
In 1985, the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health gave Kedren a contract to offer the same mental health services that Central City had previously supplied.
The facilities enabled Kedren to increase its day treatment and outpatient services in South Los Angeles and inpatient care for children and adults.
Kedren’s outpatient program, which helps kids, teens, and adults, has been running out of its present location on Avalon since it first opened.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Kedren learned about the shockingly high recidivism rates.
During that time, Kedren was able to increase funding for inpatient care and began exploring the possibility of shifting emphasis to community-based treatment through the use of an assertive community treatment model, the coordination of inpatient and outpatient care through community partnerships, and the provision of resources such as housing and job placement.
In 1965, Dr. Jones and his colleagues conducted a community needs assessment that served as the impetus for the “one-stop” idea that was only now being implemented.
One place where people could go to get their training, find work, take care of their kids, and eat without having to worry about how to get there quickly was selected as a top priority.
While working with Dr. Jones, Medical Director Dr. Frank L. Williams developed this idea further. Dr. Williams was crucial in planning and implementing high-quality, cost-effective treatment for locals.
This model is expanding and serving as the basis for Kedren’s current service infrastructure.
After Dr. John H. Griffith was named CEO of Kedren in 2002, an internal organization review revealed the company’s outdated structure couldn’t keep up with the company’s explosive expansion during the ’80s and ’90s.
Dr. Griffith oversaw a series of organizational changes at Kedren that improved communication and coordination between the medical and psychiatric staff and put the experience of many long-tenured Kedren personnel in community outreach and improvement efforts.
This readjustment was critical to maintaining service while also anticipating the demands of the organization and the community.
Kedren has almost quadrupled the number of adult inpatient beds, boosted funding for mental health and Head Start, and developed new partnerships to house clients as part of its Community Reintegration Program in recent years.
