Duly Health and Care

DuPage Medical Group has been renamed Duly Health and Care.

In September 2021, Duly Health and Care were created with one goal in mind: to help you thrive.

Proper health, in our opinion, has no bounds, and it cannot be identified in a system where people are considered patients with symptoms that need to be treated. People don’t want to be patients or even think of themselves.

At Duly Health and Care, we have professionals ready to accompany you on your health journey, no matter where it may take you.

Providers think that health isn’t merely the absence of illness but an ongoing pursuit to realize your actual potential.

As a result of their ingenuity, these providers will be able to provide you with an experience that is really out of this world.

As the name implies, we at Duly Health and Care believe that better health leads to greater happiness.

Health and care perspective.

The Story of duly health and care

50 years ago, Dr. Robert McCray, a local surgeon, and health care pioneer conceived DuPage Medical Group.

DuPage County physician practices were re-defined by Dr. McCray’s advancements, which provided personalized, cutting-edge health care that was previously only available at university medical and research centers.

The process of forming

The early 1960s saw Dr. McCray, a private practice surgeon in Glen Ellyn, Ill., re-imagining the physician practice to provide local patients with easy access to specialized medical services.

Dr. McCray foresaw many characteristics of a group practice that are now taken for granted when Glen Ellyn had just 11 physicians practicing and few medical specialists.

At the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, Dr. McCray examined specific elements that make group practices successful while traveling to 35 hospitals.

He collaborated with several other area doctors, including fellow surgeon Dr. Glen Asselmeier and internists Drs. Joe Crumrine, Fred Kuharich, James Erlenborn, and pediatricians Drs. James Vercoe and William Kindrachuk, to treat a wide range of patients.

When Dr. Gary Christensen finished his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology, he joined the team a short time later.

A 12,000 square-foot building was completed in August 1963 and renamed the Glen Ellyn Clinic in honor of the Mayo Clinic.

A team of eight doctors, fifteen nurses and lab technicians, and administrative support worked together to launch the Glen Ellyn Clinic on September 1, 1964.

Groundbreaking innovations included a lab, X-ray, and pharmacy, all located on-site at the clinic’s inception. Evening hours, 24-hour pediatric care, and an emergency department were available at the clinic.

It was a first for the residents of DuPage County, Illinois, who could get a complete variety of specialty health care in one area for the first time.

The clinic was also open to administrative innovation. A physician’s nursing and office staff, medical records, and billing functions merged into a single organization.

Accounts receivable were consolidated, and a bonus structure based on performance and clinical profitability was implemented. The founders also made sure that younger doctors had access to partnership opportunities.

300 new patients a month were seen at the clinic after its first year of operation. With a clinic extension of 24,000 square feet completed in 1970, the partnership had expanded to include 25 physicians.

Success and Expansion

In the early 1970s, the clinic’s patient population and personnel continued to grow. The influx of additional doctors necessitated the construction of two new office buildings.

New physicians viewed Glen Ellyn Clinic as an opportunity to practice in the company of established colleagues.

Meanwhile, the clinic introduced a variety of specialties to the Western Suburbs, including thoracic surgery, neurosurgery, cardiac surgery, gastroenterology, invasive cardiology, and neonatology.

To accommodate doctors in 16 specialties and sub-specialties, the clinic added 38,000 square feet of office and lab space in the 1980s.

There are now full-service clinics in Bloomingdale and Naperville. A decade later, Glen Ellyn Clinic was one of the city’s largest employers, with 80 doctors and 480 staff members handling 300,000 annual patient visits.

A yearly 100,000 tests were performed on-site, with another 25,000 done offshore. It also possessed one of Illinois’ most extensive clinically operated laboratories.

Transition and Change

As some founding clinic partners started to retire in the 1990s, significant changes occurred. In addition, the medical and information technology improvements need substantial financial investment to stay up with the current industry.

Additional changes in reimbursement methods necessitated new operational approaches due to the rise of managed care.

It became part of the country’s leading physician management company in the late 1990s to assure that the clinic would have the financial strength it would need to thrive.

However, the new set-up didn’t signify an end to the difficulties. In the 1990s, as managed care spread throughout the country, physician organizations such as Mid-America Health Partners and Wheaton Medical Clinic, which would figure prominently in the future of the Glen Ellyn Clinic, felt increasing pressures.

Wheaton Medical Clinic was founded in 1964 and had just partnered with a large health insurance company.

Mid-America Health Partners, a physician-led independent practice group, was created in 1995 with 50 primary care physicians.

It wasn’t until 1997 that Wheaton Medical Clinic combined with Glen Ellyn Clinic, that Mid-America joined.

Shortly later, doctors from all three hospitals started working together to reestablish the combined clinic as a private medical group practice with local management.

In 1999, DuPage Medical Group was born due to these efforts.
DuPage Medical Group became the state’s leading multi-specialty group practice with a leadership structure intended to maintain the proper balance between primary care and specialty care.

DuPage Medical Group, which has more than 700 primary care and specialty physicians in more than 100 locations, treats nearly one-third of DuPage County’s population each year.

A new name for DuPage Medical Group will take effect on September 15, 2021: Duly Health and Care.

Health care should be done the way it was meant to be done, and our name reflects that. “Du” is Latin for “two,” It refers to two people working together toward the same goal: the patient and the caregiver.

The way health care should feel is where we’re going and where we came from — DuPage.

Duly Health and Care is the biggest independent, multi-specialty physician-directed medical group in the Midwest with more than 900 primary care and specialty care physicians and more than 6,000 team members, in over 150 locations.

The organization’s efforts are devoted to helping those it serves to achieve their full potential by challenging the expectations to provide exceptional health and care services.

As many as 2.5 million people are supported by Duly Health and Care physicians and team members each year in their personal health journeys, and the holistic care delivery model helps each one meet their extraordinary potential.
